Dentists often refer their patients to me for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) issues.
The TMJ is where the skull and lower jaw articulates, located in front of both ears. It is among the most frequently used joints of the body, playing a very important role in moving the mouth when we eat or chew, speak or execute facial expressions. I regularly see patients who can’t speak properly, are frightened of yawning in case their jaw dislocates or have pain either locally or radiating into the head, or both. Dental problems aside, Stress is considered to be one of the main causes of TMJ problems and this is caused by Bruxism, the unconscious grinding of teeth during sleep.
Bruxism results in pain and reduced range of motion in your jaw, along with severe headaches and painful clicks or pops as the joint moves and this can wear you down.
Using a combination of techniques I physically free this area of tightness and misalignments – I do internal adjustments to the jaw as well. Once this is in place, I measure your levels and causes of Stress and provide treatment, strategies and homework to improve your ability to manage the Stress.
Nikki was referred to me by her dentist with pain in the jaw, reduced opening capacity and inability to enunciate her words appropriately. She was a Senior Executive transitioning to a new role with little support; she had aging parents whose health was deteriorating and future care decisions had to be made. Understandably, she also presented with very tight neck and shoulder muscles.
Using a combination of physical treatment, hypnotherapy, simple strategies of Mindfulness, we managed to loosen her jaw, improve her enunciation and confidence, reduce her anxiety and place her in a better mind-set. She told me her first training session about which she was feeling very anxious, had gone remarkably well. Such is the improvement in her confidence and mind set that she has been able to undertake a weight loss plan and has successfully lost 7lbs in 4 weeks.
Currently she is working with her dentist to sort out her bite and carry out related work but in the meantime, using hypnotherapy I have been able to reduce the pain she is experiencing.
I love it when she leaves the treatment room yawning to her heart’s content…..
